Minnesota Football Recruiting: Three-star LB Lucas Finnessy commits to the Gophers

Fleck and co. have reached across the border and plucked a versatile athlete out of Wisconsin

Head coach P.J. Fleck and co. received a verbal commitment from across the border last night, as Wisconsin linebacker Lucas Finnessy announced his plans to play for the Minnesota Golden Gophers. He is the seventh recruit so far to commit to Minnesota for 2020.

Not all of the internet recruiting services have had a chance to evaluate Finnessy, so he does not currently have a composite rating. But 247 Sports has him rated as a three-star linebacker (with a score of 86, for whatever that is worth) based on their own evaluations.

Scouting Report

Size and athleticism seem to be central to his appeal. But Finnessy is also versatile. He started playing cornerback as a sophomore, when he was 6’3” and 190 lbs. He has since added about 35 lbs. to his frame, without sacrificing speed, and has remained at cornerback, where his high school coaching staff believes him to be a shutdown corner at that level. Finnessy has also played fullback and wide receiver. In college, he will likely end up at outside linebacker, where he can cover a lot of ground and even drop back into coverage without being a liability.
