Head coach P.J. Fleck and the Minnesota Golden Gophers have landed their ninth commitment of the Class of 2020, receiving a verbal commitment from in-state linebacker Cody Lindenberg. He committed after an unofficial visit to campus.

247 Sports does not have a composite rating for Lindenberg yet, as the other internet recruiting services have yet to evaluate him. He was a top performer at The Opening Regional Combine in St. Louis in March, however, for whatever that is worth.

Scouting Report
I have all of your favorite cliches: Athleticism! Speed! Swarms to the football! Plays from sideline to sideline! Will need to add weight and strength to compete at the next level! Fleck and co. are taking a flyer on an in-state linebacker with good athleticism. That seems to be the coaching staff’s M.O. in recruiting linebackers so far — raw athletes — with Thomas Rush and Mariano Sori-Marin as recent examples. I can’t say they’ve earned the benefit of the doubt yet, considering all of the starting linebackers from the last two seasons were recruited by the previous staff. For now, I suppose we’ll have to trust the process and wait to see the results.

Nothing against Lindenberg or anyone else currently committed for 2020, but at this point I’m not going to rebut those who express disappointment in the current crop of recruits. Ultimately, the quality of these recruits will be determined on the field, but from a rankings standpoint, this is shaping up to be an underwhelming class. Fleck may be a victim of his own expectations here, having cited a need to "recruit at a high level" on more than one occasion.
Regarding the main photo: I have not yet settled on a permanent new photo for the commitment posts. This is simply a placeholder in the interim. But the “Fleck with an oar” photo has been retired, for now. We appreciate your patience and understanding in this transitional period.
