Alcohol is coming to the Masses at Williams and Mariucci Arenas

NCAA Basketball: Iowa at Minnesota Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports

The University of Minnesota regents voted unanimously Friday to allow beer and wine sales in the general seating sections of Williams and Mariucci. Prior to the change, only TCF Bank stadium had alcohol sales for general admission.

The change was supported by Eric Kaler along with Mark Coyle. According to the Star Tribune Coyle had the backing of campus police, risk management and student services, along with the Fan Advisory Board.

To the extent that we have an editorial position on such topics, we at The Daily Gopher are unsurprisingly in support of the change. Alcohol is a revenue generator (the U predicts an annual revenue increase of around $250,000 at both arenas not counting increased ticket sales) and there have been few additional problems from selling alcohol at TCF Bank stadium. Plus, who among us doesn’t want to pay an outrageous price for a bad domestic beer?

In honor of our booze summer, comment below on the appropriate draft list for beer. The correct wine list is “It doesn’t matter. Wine tasting is bullshit and experts can’t tell the difference between white and red. Target house wine is fine.”
