Minnesota Football Recruiting: Three-star DB Abner Dubar commits to the Gophers

A safety from the Lone Star State is headed to Minnesota

Gopher Sports

In the span of less than two weeks, the Minnesota Golden Gophers have more than doubled the number of verbal commitments in their current recruiting class. Adding to that total today is Texas safety Abner Dubar, who announced this afternoon that he was committing to play for head coach P.J. Fleck and the Golden Gophers.

Dubar is the sixth defensive back to commit to the Gophers in this recruiting cycle. I would assume Fleck and co. won’t take more than five recruits for that position group, meaning Dubar represents the last one in the boat, barring a future decommitment.

Scouting Report

Dubar has played running back and defensive back at the high school level, but is expected to play safety in college, although he certainly has the athleticism to be a versatile player in the Gophers’ defensive backfield. His athleticism is off the charts, and his quickness and explosiveness are evident when he is on either side of the ball. Where he stands out as a defensive back is in his physicality as a tackler. Dubar reacts quickly and possesses the kind of closing speed critical to making a play, even when it seems like he is out of it. He lowers the boom on several occasions in his highlight reel, particular on crossing routes over the middle.
