Minnesota Golden Gophers defensive end Alex Reigelsperger announced yesterday on Twitter that he is medically retiring from football. In the announcement, he cites a “serious neck injury and concussion” that he suffered back in April as the impetus for his decision. The redshirt freshman did not see the field last year in his only season with the team.

Reigelsperger was a sought-after three-star recruit as a high school senior, with scholarship offers from 15 different Power 5 programs.
Obviously his football career is over before it ever really got a chance to get started. But as you can tell from the text of his announcement, he has life aspirations beyond the sport of football.
