I’d like to interrupt our regularly scheduled football content to talk about the future of Gopher basketball. Today is the first game of the football season and the hoops program is hosting a handful of very important visitors.

OFFICIAL VISITS

Ty Berry

Pos: Combo Guard
HT: 6’2”
Current School: Sunrise Academy (KS)

This recruit is seriously considering the Gophers due to his relationship with Kyle Linsted. Berry is playing at Sunrise and Linsted has build a great relationship with him over the years. Berry would be able to play point or off the ball for the Gophers. Northwestern and Iowa State have or are getting visits.

Frankie Collins

Pos: Point Guard
HT: 6’1”
Current School: Compass Prep (AZ)

Collins is a junior and going to be a huge target for the 2021 class. Undoubtedly a point guard who would come to the Gophers filling what will be a big void when Marcus Carr leaves.

UNOFFICIAL VISITORS

Dawson Garcia

Pos: Power Forward
HT: 6’11”
Current School: Prior Lake

The top of the list for Gopher targets that appear to have a realistic shot of landing here. Garcia is a perfect fit for the Gophers but they have some major competition here. North Carolina and Kansas have offered along with a ton of other very good programs. Ideally Garcia commits and his AAU teammates want to join him to give the Gophers the best recruiting class this program has seen in a very long time.

Kerwin Walton

Pos: Shooting Guard
HT: 6’5”
Current School: Hopkins

Not as highly ranked as some of the other local options but Walton is one kid I absolutely want to see end up playing for the Gophers. If I list out my ideal 2020 class, he is on that list. Hoping he has a great visit, wants to stay close to home and pulls the trigger sooner than later on his Gopher offer.

Stephen Crowl

Pos: Center
HT: 6’9”
Current School: Eastview

Big man from Eastview who will certainly give the Gophers strong consideration along with the likes of Wisconsin, Iowa and Colorado. The 247 site has him ranked as the 102nd best player in the 2020 class.

Ben Carlson

Pos: Power Forward
HT: 6’9”
Current School: East Ridge

Another local 4-star kid and Carlson will have to be convinced to stay here over offers from Xavier, Stanford, Purdue and others.

UNOFFICIAL UNDERCLASSMEN

Camden Heiden

Pos: Small Forward
HT: 6’5”
Current School: Wayzata

Class of 2022 but Heiden is a younger name to watch closely. He will be a guest at the game tonight and gets to look forward to 2 years of Richard Pitino courting him. The sophomore already has offers from Iowa, Purdue, Wisconsin and Iowa State.

How much fun would it be to come out of this weekend feeling good about how the football team took care of business and the basketball team the ball rolling with a verbal commitment to the 2020 class.

I don’t get the feeling that anyone will be pulling the trigger this weekend. If anyone will, it would be Berry or Walton. But I don’t think they are close.
