Minnesota Basketball: Three Keys to beating Michigan State

After putting together back-to-back, resume building wins, the Gophers are hosting Michigan State. The Spartans spent a couple weeks ranked as high as 4th in the country before dropping their first two Big Ten games to Northwestern and Wisconsin. Now the Spartans come to the Barn staring down a chance to start the conference season 0-3. Can the Gophers get this home win over a good Michigan State team?

A monster night from Marcus Carr - When Northwestern upset the Spartans, Boo Buie scored 30 points. In their most recent loss to Wisconsin, it was D’mitrik Trice scoring 29. Perhaps this is the night for Carr to blow up and have himself a monster game.

Do the little things - Michigan State is always such a bac matchup for us, mostly because they do the things like rebounding and getting good shots. They do those things so well and we never seem to have the patience to do that every possession. Eventually we get worn down and the flood gates open. We can’t rely on someone shooting 8/9 from three to get this win. Rebound, don’t turn the ball over, get good shots...every single possession.

Pass the ball - This is going to become the new recurring theme of these keys to winning. MOVE THE BALL. When we turn into a dribble-fest, we get terrible shots and our offense stagnates (which does a nice job of creating offense for the opponent). Driving to the rim is great, but get some ball movement to open up the lane a little first.

Beating Iowa was a huge win, but I don’t see the Gophers getting back-to-back wins over top 20 teams. The Spartans are balanced and deeper. I would be pleasantly surprised with a Gopher win, but I’m assuming it’ll be Michigan State tonight.
