With one week until Early National Signing Day, head coach P.J. Fleck and co. have reeled in a verbal commitment from Florida defensive tackle Luther McCoy. McCoy announced this morning his pledge to sign with the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
I am very blessed and thankful for the opportunities that I have had.

McCoy is a an athletic interior defensive linemen that could play multiple spots in different fronts. He spent much of his senior season working as a 1-technique, but should probably viewed as more of a 3 or 5-technique at the next level. McCoy is at his best when he can can find some leverage and use his power to get around blockers. He will need to add some pass-rushing moves to his toolbox, but he understands the need to generate pressure, which is encouraging. McCoy is already thick through the torso (he’s listed at 6-foot-4, 290 pounds, which might be a little generous), but his body and frame should still undergo some type of transformation once lifting in a college strength program, even though he is already power cleaning over 300 pounds. Increased core strength should allow for him to find a more explosive get off. In addition to his desire to get after the quarterback, what also stands out about McCoy is his movement patterns in the lower half as he’s able to bend and distribute his weight properly. That likely stems from his basketball background.
