Turkish recruit David Mutaf commits to Gophers

Sharpshooter adds versatility to 2020 lineup

NCAA Basketball: Minnesota at Northwestern Quinn Harris-USA TODAY Sports

The Gophers received some good news for their 2020 prospects when David Mutaf, a recruit out of Turkey, announced his commitment to Minnesota for the 2020 season. The signing will give the Gophers one remaining scholarship for the class.

Mutaf, a 6-6, 200-pound combo guard, brings good size and a reportedly great shot to the position. A lefty, he can score from anywhere on the court, capable of the catch-and-shoot and brings a high basketball IQ to the table. He is a native of Istanbul, was a member of the Turkish junior national team, and picked Minnesota over Arkansas, the only other official offer he received. However, he was also being recruited by USC, Arizona State, Georgetown and Missouri.

Eurospects.com had this to say:

Mutaf certainly adds depth to the Gophers, and hopefully his game translates to the point where he can contribute right away. With Drew Peterson reneging on his transfer to Minnesota, Mutaf will almost assuredly be looked at to provide minutes at the small forward position.

Paired with Jamal Mashburn Jr., another recruit with a reputation for being a good shooter, Mutaf has the opportunity to bump up Minnesota’s shooting prowess. Of course, if you had a nickel for every time we’ve been told that the Gophers were going to be a good shooting team you’d be retired by now.

SORRY, I KNOW, OPTIMISM. I GET IT.
