On Wednesday the Big Ten released conference-only schedules for all 14 teams (TDG’s analysis of Minnesota’s schedule is here). Other leagues have made similar decisions, or at least dramatically cut back on non-conference games. Fans, however, hope this is a one-year trend.

According to results from the most recent SB Nation Reacts survey, more than half of NCAA football fans don’t want their team’s schedules to focus on conference games beyond this season.

I’m torn on this point. I like good non-conference games that match the Gophers up against fun, interesting, or big name opponents. I’m also a big fan of taking road trips to good college venues, regardless of opponent quality. That said, I despise FCS and cupcake G5 matchups because they’re boring. But I also know Minnesota (at least historically) has been a team that needs some of those games to ride out down seasons. Personally, I think I’d prefer a 10 game Big Ten schedule as the sweet spot and I wonder if perhaps COVID will move the conference to that outcome permanently.

The Reacts poll also asked if fans thought the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, should stay in the ACC permanently. The answer? Yes. I think college football fans might be tired of Irish backers pounding their chests about how cool they are for being independent.

ACC fans specifically were even more in favor of the concept, 88% of fans from ACC schools voted in favor. On the other side of things, Notre Dame fans dramatically disagree. Only 14% of Notre Dame fans think the team should stay in the conference.

Notre Dame had long been linked to the Big Ten. But a majority of Big Ten fans are still in favor of the midwestern team staying in the ACC. SPOILER: It’s because Notre Dame fans are annoying and we don’t want to risk the Big Ten asking them to join.
