Minnesota Basketball: NCAA approves transfer waiver of Liam Robbins

The Gophers got their starting center and Daniel Oturu replacement approved to play in 2020-21

NCAA Basketball: Missouri Valley Conference Tournament-Bradley vs Drake Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports

In early April, Gopher basketball received a transfer commitment from Liam Robbins, a 7’ center from Drake. Robbins was coming to Minnesota to step into the role previously occupied by Daniel Oturu and would have 2 years of eligibility remaining. When he would be eligible to play was the question.

Today the NCAA informed Robbins and the Minnesota coaching staff that he would be ELIGIBLE to play immediately this season.

This is fantastic news for the Gopher program heading into the 2020-21 season. The loss of Oturu was going to be a massive blow to the Gopher’s success in the upcoming season, Robbins will help to mitigate that loss. The junior brings 14 points, 7 rebounds and nearly 3 blocks to the starting lineup. Robbins likely lacks the ability to carry the team in stretches, but he will bring offensive production and some defense at the rim.

This waiver does so much for the prospects of success for this year’s Gopher squad. More on how this impacts the roster in the coming days. Up next the Gophers are awaiting word on whether or not Both Gach will also get a transfer waiver to play immediately.
