The Minnesota Gophers fall sports seasons are in full swing as another sport picks things up this weekend and joins the fray. The Gopher football team wil lbe enjoying their bye week which means it’s the perfect time to pick a different Gopher sports team and give them a watch this weekend. You will have plenty to choose from whether in person, on tv, or via stream. Here is a list of the Gopher sports schedule for this weekend and how you can check in on each team’s games.
Friday October 8th:
Basketball—Big Ten Media Days—8:30 AM
Kick off your busy weekend checking out both Lindsay Whalen’s and Ben Johnson’s Big Ten Media Days press conferences live from Chicago Friday morning. Whalen will take the podium at 8:30 AM, while Johnson will follow immediately behind at 8:40. Both will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
Women’s Swimming and Diving—@ Iowa 4:00 PM
The Gopher women kick off their season in the pool with a road meet at rival Iowa on Fridat afternoon. Minnesota has won the last 11 matchups against the Hawkeyes stretching back to 2010-11. The Gophers will bring a younger team to the meet including 18 freshman and sophomores. The meet will stream live on BTN+.
Women’s Hockey @ Minnesota-Duluth 6:00 PM
The Gopher women will look to forget last weekend’s opening series sweep at home to Ohio State and jump back with another series against a rival. Minnesota is ranked #6 in the nation while the Bulldogs are #7 after splitting a home series against Minnesota State last weekend. Minnesota and UMD will most likely be in a season long battle for the #3 spot in the WCHA so this weekends series already are important...and as Minnesota learned last season could be the different between a NCAA Tournament berth and staying home in March. The series opener faces off at 6:00 and will stream live on BTN+.
Men’s Hockey vs Mercyhurst 7:00 PM
The Gopher men finally kick off their season after last weekend’s opener against Alaska was postponed due to COVID issues with the Nanooks. Minnesota returns a major core of last year’s NCAA Tournament roster and adds several impact freshman to what should be a top team in both the Big Ten and the nation. The series opener kicks off at 7:00 PM and will air on Bally Sports North Plus and stream on both the Bally Sports App and BTN+.
Volleyball @ Michigan 8:00 PM
The Gopher volleyball team heads to Ann Arbor to take on Michigan live on BTN Friday night. Minnesota already defeated the Wolverines in the Big Ten opener for both teams at the Pav where Michigan clawed back from a 2-0 Minnesota lead to force a 5th set. The Gophers would prevail in the end, but are coming off of two lackluster matches losing at Wisconsin and needed five sets to franticly come back to defeat Northwestern. Hopefully the Gophers figured things out, because if not it would be a nationally televised win for the Wolverines.
Saturday October 9th
Women’s Hockey @ Minnesota-Duluth 3:00 PM
Game two of the series between the Gophers and Bulldogs from Amsoil Arena kicks off at 3PM and will again stream on BTN+.
Men’s Hockey vs Mercyhurst 5:00 PM
The second game of the series between Minnesota and Mercyhurst faces off at 5:00 PM from 3M Arena at Mariucci and will air on Bally Sports North. Plenty of cheap tickets are available, so come check out what should be an exciting team.
Volleyball @ Michigan State 5:30 PM
The Gopher volleyball team will head across the Mitten just a bit as they go from one Michigan team Friday to the other Saturday. Michigan State is 1-3 thus far in conference play and Minnesota should be able to escape East Lansing with a win. Match time is 5:30 and will stream live on BTN+.
Sunday October 10th
Soccer @ Purdue Noon
The Gopher soccer team fresh off of a huge 4-1 home win against Penn State last Sunday heads to West Lafayette to take on a ranked Purdue team. The Boilermakers are ranked #25 in the nation and are 4-1 in Big Ten play with their only loss to Michigan. The Gophers are 2-3 in the conference and could use a win to jump back closer to the middle of the pack. The match kicks off at Noon and will stream live on BTN+.
Monday/Tuesday October 11-12
Men’s Golf @ Purdue Fall Invitational
The Gopher men’s golf team coming off of an 8th place finish at the Rich Harvest Farms Intercollegiate tournament head back eastward to Indiana to play in Purdue’s Fall Invitational Monday and Tuesday. Action tees off Monday morning with live leaderboards available here.
Good Luck to all the Gopher teams playing this weekend!
