On Thursday it was announced that Minnesota Gophers senior running back Mohamed Ibrahim was named to the First Team Offense of the Walter Camp Preseason All-American Team. The reigning Big Ten Running Back of the Year is earning lots of preseason attention as the official “Watch List Season: kicks off.
In 2020 Ibrahim was a monster for the Gophers on the field. He led the Big Ten in rushing attempts with 201, rushing yards with 1,076, yards per game with 153.7, touchdowns with 15, points with 90, and all-purpose yards per game at 168.4. He set a Gopher school record with his rushing yards per game tally, and tied another with his four rushing TD’s in one game—twice at Maryland and at Illinois. Mo’s 15 rushing touchdowns is 4th all time in a single season in Gopher history—-and he did it in just 8 games!
He heads into the 2021 season with a chance to jump up the Minnesota all-time rushing record books. In just 28 career games played Mo ranks ninth on Minnesota’s career rushing list with 2,840 yards, tied for sixth in school history with 31 rushing touchdowns, and his 5.49 yards per carry average ranks eighth all-time in school history.
Mo needs just 474 yards rushing in 2021 to jump into 5th all-time in rushing yards in Minnesota history leaping David Cobb, Marian Barber Jr, Chris Darkins, and Marion Barber III. With 970 yards he will jump Thomas Hamner into 4th all time, and would need just 122 more to catch Laurence Maroney for third place. Mo needs just 9 rushing touchdowns to tie Darrell Thompson for the most in program history.
More preseason awards will be haned out over the next few months before fall camp kicks off in August and the season begins September 2nd at TCF Bank Stadium when the Gophers host Ohio State.
