The past couple seasons the Gophers have made huge strides in rebuilding the program to Big Ten respectability. Much of the on-the-field success has been attributed to the improved play by the defense and the offensive line. Playmakers and an offense that can consistently put points on the board against Big Ten defenses has not been a team strength. I believe that this year's recruiting class weighs more heavily on play-makers on the offense.

Here they are...

NOTES:

Jones spent the summer attending several camps around the country and slowly started to raise his recruiting profile. He then had an outstanding season with impressive stats that was against Minneapolis city league competition. And then his recruitment really blew up when we went down to the Under Armour All-Star game and was as good as anybody else in attendance. Jones wound up taking home the MVP honors and walked away with scholarship offers from Florida, Michigan and increased interest from other helmet schools. He remained committed to Minnesota, honoring the verbal he gave in February of 2013 and now Jones headlines Minnesota's 2014 recruiting class.

This is an outstanding get and a more impressive job of keeping him for Coach Kill and staff. Jones is the first elite Minnesota recruit who chose to stay home in recent memory. Offers from Michigan, Florida, Michigan State, Wisconsin, etc were not enough to pry him away from what he believes Kill is doing here.

Everyone is very excited and they should be. Jones likely will contribute immediately. I wouldn't expect him to supplant the senior David Cobb, he is still a true freshman about to compete in the Big Ten, but he I do expect he will see the field and make an impact.

NOTES:

As a junior, Holland caught 2 passes and was primarily a linebacker. Heading into his senior year he switched to WR because there was a team need and he absolutely blew up setting single-season school records for receptions (64), receiving yardage (1,032) and receiving touchdowns (17). A big receiver with what appears to be very nice play-making skills. ESPN eval snippets...

The more you watch him, the better he gets. He is sneaky fast and explosive, but his physical stature makes him very difficult to handle in space one-on-one. You can't tackle him without help. He is a redzone mismatch, he can shield the ball from defenders on underneath routes and he can extend plays after the catch.

...

Holland is an impressive, under the radar player that we are surprised has slipped through the cracks he's very similar to another WR in this class Chris Godwin committed to Penn State. He has the coveted measurables and playmaking ability necessary for the BCS level of play.

I would like to assume that he'll redshirt a year to refine the technical elements of playing WR in the Big Ten, but this is a thin position for the Gophers and this staff has not been shy about playing true freshmen. If he earns it, he'll play next year. Very excited about the career of Holland!

NOTES:

Another offensive player, this one not a skill position guy, who I am very excited about. Mayes, the younger brother of freshman Alex Mayes, was the starting center for one of the US Army All-American teams last month and one of the top centers in this year's recruiting class. From his ESPN eval...

He is a dominant run blocker at his present level of competition demonstrating the explosive pop and surge needed to knock defenders back on their heels when single blocking, and displays the hand strength needed to control and maneuver defenders once contact is made. Playing out of a three-point stance, we see the balance and agility to play on his feet and adjust to quickness within tight spaces.

And this from his Football University profile.

At 6'5" and 320 pounds, Mayes is a massive force on the offensive line. Mayes is a tremendous blocker who knows how to use his size to his advantage. He excels while blocking, using his quickness and athleticism to get a jump on the opposition. Mayes takes the right angels when battling oncoming rushers and has the versatility to adjust when on the move. He finishes every play with attitude, something every coach loves to see. Mayes has the option to be a guard or a center at the next level.

Strength as a run-blocker...perfect. I look forward to Mayes as the Gopher's starting center for much of his career. Offensive linemen generally benefit from a red-shirt year to allow more time for their bodies to mature, harden and strengthen for the rigors of Big Ten play. Described as a mauler and a kid who already posses better than average strength/size. He has a chance to play early, maybe even this year. It all depends on what happens at center this spring and fall.

Great to have the entire Mayes family in Gopher Nation and very excited about Connor as a significant contributor throughout his Gopher career.

NOTES:

Put up very impressive stats (2,200+ yards and 26 TDs) as a senior after tearing his ACL during his junior season. This against quality Georgia competition. Smith is a productive back who missed out on much of the summer circuit, which likely damaged his recruiting profile.

Smith is a productive high school back who shows the skill set to catch the ball out of the backfield or when aligned in the slot as a receiver. Could potentially be a every down type back in his career at the next level but will need some polish and improved power as a runner between the tackles. Most likely a Division 1 running back. May need a redshirt year but could potentially get on the field early if he can adapt to the speed of the college game.

The backfield is getting to be a little bit crowded this year with David Cobb coming off a strong junior season, the speedy Berkley Edwards ready to go, Donnell Kirkwood still on the roster and the addition of Jeff Jones. A redshirt year wouldn't be a bad idea for the kid but if he earns playing time, then we'll have a pretty exciting back on our hands for the next few years. I have no doubt he will be a significant contributor over his Gopher career, I doubt it will be in 2014.

NOTES:

Elmore committed to the Gophers early and has been the program's biggest social media cheerleader. Every recruit that was pursued by the Gopher staff was encouraged by Elmore via Twitter. This kid is excited to be a Gopher and is a very nice addition to an already deep and talented position.

To steal from Matt's Scroll of the Sworn, Elmore is the type of TE who is physical enough to play every down and athletic enough to be a real weapon in the passing game. ESPN eval does't exude enthusiasm but it does confirm that he is a traditional TE with some play-making ability.

Elmore is not a prospect who wows you in any particular facet of his game, but he's a tight end with good size and the tools to develop into a productive blocker and solid contributor as a receiving target. Abilities look better suited at the next level as more of a traditional TE

Very excited to have a kid with that offer list, that size and enthusiasm for the Gopher program. The depth chart at TE is rather clogged right now but Elmore has the tools to earn some playing time, key word being earn. There is also some speculation he ends up moving to DE where he would certainly take this year to redshirt.

Is a dynamic weapon as an athletic QB who is a project as a passer, but shows instincts and vision as a runner and improviser. Lines up at CB, but projects better as a safety with his measurables.

I believe that he is being brought in to play quarterback and will have the necessary time to develop those particular skills with Leidner the incumbent starter and redshirt freshman, Streveler the likely backup after having 2 spring practices and 2 fall practices before next season starts.

McKinzy has athletic ability that will get him on the field eventually.

NOTES:

A former Kent State commit who flipped to Minnesota after increased recruiting from the Gophers and a few other BCS level schools following Gentry's senior season. Gentry brings size and speed to the Gopher receiving corp (which is now VERY young). Long arms, built like a basketball player and has great hands.

Gentry is part possession player, part big play target. He is very rangy and athletic given his size. Could play inside or outside and is extremely reliable. You know he is going to make a play on the ball if it comes his way. He's competitive and confident - knows he's a playmaker.

Another skill position player that I am very excited about. Big kid who can use his height and jumping ability to be a difficult matchup. As a senior Gentry racked up over 1,100 yards and 10 TDs on 44 catches. The staff has certainly been willing to play receivers as true freshmen, but there is also getting to be a handful of young receivers on the depth chart. I feel like a broken record but if Gentry earns playing time he'll certainly get it. Or he'll redshirt to add some bulk before having a solid career

Great size and athleticism; also a kid who has may not have a positional home just yet. But this staff likes to bring in guys with talent and let the position sort itself out later. Gibson could be an athletic and play-making TE or maybe he adds bulk and slides to defensive end (much like Elmore).

From a three point stance we see the initial quickness and smooth running stride which allows him to put immediate pressure on defensive backs when running deep seam routes; his foot quickness, elusiveness along with a smooth stride allows him to rip off big chunks of yardage after the catch.

South Carolina made a late push to flip Gibson, but he remained a Gopher and has a promising future. I would anticipate that he'll redshirt and allow time to develop and strengthen. Kill stated that Gibson will be playing offense, but these things will sort themselves out eventually.

Bring him in, bulk him up, team him what you want him to do and maybe he develops into a contributing player.

We see a prospect with great length; adding bulk while improving functional playing strength are a must; is worth looking at as a defensive end; his athleticism and leaping ability are pluses. Handles the 14 yard long snap efficiently and does a very good job of covering punts; flashes open field tackling ability; Has two up the middle FG/PAT blocks to his credit.

Another developmental offensive lineman who will redshirt to gain strength and improve technique. Weyler also may have some position flexibility to him as his home could be at guard or at tackle.

Flashes good playing strength but mostly over powers current level of competition with his size and positioning. Is more productive blocking everything in front of him

What exactly are the Gophers getting with their 2014 class? How does it compare to previous crops Jerry Kill has brought to Minnesota? What are the themes and relative concerns?

The latest crop of Golden Gophers are now signed and set to enroll this coming Summer. Today we take a look at what exactly Kill has brought in, exploring the overall themes, skills and concerns of the 2014 Minnesota signing class.

Visualizing the Class

Among the many things you'll read about the class Jerry Kill inked yesterday was it represented his best recruiting haul to date, by almost any measure. Certainly from a class rating, average recruit rating or team rank scores, this was Minnesota's best signing day class since 2008.

But doesn't the signing of Jeff Jones, the highest rated player to ever sign with a NLI with Minnesota, skew the rankings higher? The visualization below certainly paints Jones as an outlier (2014 signees in maroon):

That's not to say that Jones is the only reason why the 2014 is rated higher than others.

The box plot to the right suggests that the upper quartile and whisker of the latest crop is stronger than any of Kill's previous classes. The highest rated recruits from 2014 group (excluding Jones) push the upper bounds of the distribution higher than previous years, highlighting a trend of the "best" of Kill's recruits getting better each season. The same could be said of the floor, which is also rising with each subsequent class.

Another aspect of the class to consider is the distribution isn't as tightly "packed" (or the inter-quartile range is wider) compared to 2013; the 2014 boxplot more closely resembles the 2012 class, the tails of the most recent signees aren't as long. Again, this is representative of the lower tail of the distribution getting better (i.e. the lowest rated recruits are better than previous years).

If you think of players at or above the upper quartile as your potential "impact players" relative to the rest of the class, then Kill's "impact" signees haven't immediately translated into results on the field. Names like Andre McDonald, Jamel Harbison, Philip Nelson, Steven Montgomery and Max Shortell as among those who fall into the upper tails in each season. On the other hand, several other recruits who fell into this category needed more time to develop and their best football may be ahead of them, such as Jonah Pirsig, Isaac Hayes, Berkley Edwards, De'Vondre Campbell and De'Niro Laster.

Another irony? Some of the most productive players during Kill's tenure were actually lower tail signees from the first two classes. Guys like Eric Murray, Theiren Cockran, Derrick Wells, Ben Lauer and Cedric Thompson were all among the lowest rated 8 recruits Kill has signed to date, and yet all are very productive starters.

The point? It's tough to quantity the impact of what better recruiting classes on paper will mean on the field. The classes are incrementally improving each season, though the payoff of said improvement may be down the road a bit.

Oh, and Jeff Jones is an extreme outlier compared to every other signee the last four years.

MANBALL

Half of the signees from the 2014 class will play on the line of scrimmage. 4 defensive linemen, 3 offensive linemen and 3 tight ends. These are big boys too: none of the offensive linemen are smaller than 6'4" and 280 lbs.; Steven Richardson is the runt of the defensive line litter at 5'11"/285, otherwise everyone else is at least 6'3"/255+; Elmore and Lingen are big framed TEs at 6'5"/245+.

If there was any question about what style of offense the Gophers want to run and the type of team Kill wants to build in Dinkytown, those doubts were shattered yesterday. Coach wants a physical running game that utilizes multiple tight end and fullback formations, while similarly needing bigger, stronger defensive linemen to battle Big Ten offensive linemen.

The 2014 trench reinforcements continue a trend that Kill and Limegrover have established from the moment they arrived on campus. From a program building perspective, Matt Limegrover has knocked it out of the park with the cumulative effect of his last three OL recruiting classes. Just look at this list:

Pirsig: 6'9". High 3* prospect. Auburn, Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, Miami, Iowa offers.

Lauer: 6'6". FWAA freshmen All-American.

Hayes: 6'3". High 3* prospect. Boise State, Virginia Tech, Oregon State offers.

Alex Mayes: 6'5". 3* prospect. Baylor, Kansas State, Texas Tech offers.

Connor Mayes: 6'5". High 3* prospect. Army All-American. Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Baylor, TCU, Ole Miss, Kansas State offers.

That's an incredibly strong crop of offensive linemen to build your program around, not to mention the other scholarship linemen Limegrover has signed and the burgeoning walk-on program that's produced two starters. Not only are they talented and peppered with helmet school offers, the linemen Kill and Limegrover have brought in are all massive. When Isaac Hayes is the runt of the litter at 6'3" and 300+, you know exactly what the strategy is: recruit tall OL with wide frames who can move their feet and bend -- proceed to watch them road grade all game.

The Right Skills

To go along with the whole #MANBALL approach, one needs bigger bodied receivers with the size to go out and block for running backs in the boundary. The Gophers also needed playmakers at receiver who could stretch the field and win one-on-one battles in the passing games. Those type of wide outs - tall with excellent speed and hands - are very hard to land, since every other program in the country wants those kind of players too.

That's why grabbing Melvin Holland, Jr., Isaiah Gentry and Conner Krizancic was such a coup. All 3 fit the profile of exactly what the Gophers needed, but more importantly, they're very talented players who should immediately help the offense move forward. Combined with Donovahn Jones, Drew Wolitarsky and Maxx Williams, the latest crop of Minnesota receivers should pose match-up problems against smaller DBs in the Big Ten. It'll be up to Mitch Leidner now to get them the ball in a place where they can do something with it.

Related to skill sets, Elmore and Gibson are multi-faceted players who can fit different roles on offense depending upon the situation. Being "multiple" on offense requires more depth and breadth of talents, especially at the tight end spot. Craig James adds a needed element of speed, not only at corner, but in the return game. The coaches expect James to come in and compete right away on special teams. Jeff Jones and Rodney Smith are both patient zone runners who love running between the tackles and playing physical, so they're a perfect compliment to run behind Limegrover's wall.

Light in the Back Seven

Minnesota focused much of their attention this class towards offense and an additional four spots allocated for defensive linemen. That leaves just four total signees in the back seven, a strategy Kill attempted to spin during his press conference as by design. I'm not entirely convinced.

For starters, the staff only brought in one defensive back (James), though they would have ideally signed 1-2 more. They were stung by the de-commitment of Khari Blasingame late in the process, though they had their chances with other defensive back prospects who all chose to go elsewhere -- including some non-AQ schools. It does feel as though they weren't going to reach for a DB just to take an additional one this class with so many other pressing needs elsewhere. However, that brings the total number of defensive backs signed over the last two classes at a meager 3. Clearly, that position group will be among the biggest priorities for the class of 2015.

Similarly, recruitment of high school linebackers was a little curious. They landed Everett Williams early in the cycle and shifted their focus to pursuing JUCO backers. They didn't re-engage their interest in signing a second high school linebacker until late, by which time they had already allowed Indiana to build a stronger relationship with their top LB prospect, Tegray Scales.

Cumulative

More than anything else, this class brings all of Kill's recruiting efforts at Minnesota together and finally establishes the type of depth needed to field a successful Big Ten team. There are no longer positions with glaring holes on the depth chart or spots where the program will be hurting after the next wave of seniors graduate. There is a depth and breadth of skills at offensive line, running back, wide receiver/tight end, defensive line, linebacker and in the secondary. About the only spot where the Gophers aren't particularly deep or experienced is quarterback, and the coaching staff didn't seem at all concerned about that position on Signing Day.

Kill mentioned it repeatedly throughout the year and reiterated it yesterday, but the third full recruiting class is the one that "turns the tide" for the program. From a depth perspective, he's absolutely right. At the skill positions, the Gophers are still relatively young but talented. They should continue to grow and develop together, and the recent signees will improve the overall roster competition and make everyone better by pressuring folks to step up their game.

The past couple seasons the Gophers have made huge strides in rebuilding the program to Big Ten respectability. Much of the on-the-field success has been attributed to the improved play by the defense. Certainly having players the caliber of Ra'Shede Hageman and Brock Vereen has helped, but each of the Kill recruiting classes have added key players who have been significant contributors as well as added vitally important depth.

This year's defensive class does not, on the surface, appear to have any budding stars or at least any tremendously exciting players. But I do fully expect that this is another class of guys who will provide quality depth (something not to be overlooked or undervalued). Then of course there is always the belief that this staff has identified kids who will contribute and become very good Gophers in spite of their lower recruiting ranking; see Eric Murray.

Let's meet this year's defensive class!

Poock was a full-qualifier out of high school who went the JUCO route to gain himself better scholarship offers. This means that he has played just one year of ball at Iowa Western and will have three years of eligibility at Minnesota. He led his JUCO team in tackles. Matt, in his Scroll of the Sworn, believes that Poock will come in and compete on the weakside, moving DeVondre Campbell over to the strongside.

Poock very well may have the most immediate impact out of this defensive class and will have the opportunity to play right away, filling in the holes left by James Manuel and Aaron Hill in the linebacking corp.
Kafo is a prospect out of Canada and a bit of a developmental prospect. Does have good size and some tools to work with and could grow into a player that can contribute at the FBS level but we feel will need some time and work.

There is time to develop as the defensive line is fairly deep at the moment. I fully expect that Kafo will redshirt and have the opportunity to contribute down the road.

Matt pointed out that this is exactly the "type" of DT that this staff has brought in in the past and likely will continue to bring in. Tough kid, strong kid and appears to be a good football player who is just lacking the ideal measurables. This eval prior to a Rivals camp last May.

Speaking of star rankings he currently has none per Rivals and that's just wrong. Richardson is a perfect NG type who will battle all shapes and sizes. Terrific mix of brute force and quickness and Richardson has a chance on Saturday to establish himself in a big way from a rankings/stars standpoint. I see Richardson easily as a mid three star kid to start. If Richardson was three inches taller he would have 30 offers and be a potential four star already just based off of his tape.

As a senior, Richardson notched 34 TFLs and 17 sacks playing along side Enoch Smith (4-star Michigan St commit). ESPN eval.

Richardson can be tough to move as an interior defensive lineman and can clog things up and help defend the run. While he can be a stout presence and plays with good effort overall

Good addition, good depth and a productive football player from a good high school program.

James is another kid in this class that is probably just an inch of height away from being a much more highly sought after commodity. As it stands, he is a very good cover corner who possesses very good speed.

Way above average (coverage skills). Can move his feet, flip his hips and catch the ball. In man coverage he shows very good make-up speed but is usually disciplined enough to stay on top of receiver. In zone coverage he gets his eyes back into the QB and once the ball is thrown displays a good ability to cover ground.

...

James has the feet and speed to be a highly sought after corner and then, on top of that, should be very successful at the next level. Another inch would make him truly special.

I have been waiting for weeks for his commitment and thrilled to have him as a Golden Gopher. Redshirting is a possibility but this is also another position that is on the thin side. This staff is not shy about playing true freshmen and if he shows that he can help us on the field, you know he'll be there. James has very good speed which may also be displayed in special teams.

That is a short list but this is the defensive class of 2014.

Also not to be fully ignored is the list of preferred walk-ons in this class. These kids will most likely never be contributors outside of maybe special teams. But there are a couple key contributors on the current roster who came to the Gopher program as a walk-on. So this year's preferred walk-on class.

We know the Gophers had a good NSD, but what about the rest of the Big Ten?

We know that the Gophers had a good National Signing Day today nailing down commitments from several players who will be impacting games over the next five years. Of course, the rest of the Big Ten also thinks they had a pretty good day today as well. Here is a quick look around the rest of the Big Ten, with some limited rankings. This is not intended to be a full rankings article, as I really am not qualified to rank the other teams I have hardly paid attention to. However, I will try and find some tidbits that Gopher fans may find interesting. All listed rankings below will come from the 24/7/Composite Rankings THEY ARE NOT MY OWN!!!!

Big Ten West Division

Wisconsin Badgers- Overall Big Ten Rank #5

26 Recruits, 3 4-Star, 20 3-Star.

Gary Anderson's first full recruiting class is a large one with 26 recruits deciding to become Badgers. Wisconsin didn't do as well in-state has they have in past seasons with five of the top ten recruits in Wisconsin becoming Badgers. The loss that stings the most for WI is 4-Star DL Craig Evans, who is enrolling at Michigan State. According to several Badger boosters, Evans reportedly could not get into Wisconsin due to academic reasons, but Evans himself stated that this was not the case.

Arguably the Most Highly Anticipated Recruit:

Wisconsin has had its share of very good offensive linemen in the recent past, and it appears that they have thier next potentially stud lineman in 6'7 305 lb OT Jaden Gault. Gault from Monona,WI a Madison suburb enrolled early at UW and spurned other schools such as Michigan State, Miami, Nebraska and Arkansas to become a Badger.

Less Heralded Recruit Sure to Torment the Gophers at Some Point:

Running back Taiwan Deal from Hyattsville, MD is a 3-star overall. With an impressive offer list, Deal appears to be the next running back to slide into the pecking order for Wisconsin. With the graduation of James White, watch for Deal to immediately take Corey Clement's place as the #3 RB for the Badgers next fall.

Nebraska Cornhuskers- Overall Big Ten Rank #6

25 Recruits, 2 4-Star, 22 3-Star.

The potential uncertainty with Bo Pelini's future at Nebraska did not impact recruiting terribly, as 25 recruits decided to become Cornhuskers. Nebraska only convinced one of the two top players in Nebraska to become Huskers, as Harrison Phillips, a DE from Omaha decided to go to Stanford. Nebraska's top player DJ Foster is an OG from Lincoln.

Arguably the Most Highly Anticipated Recruit:

Nebraska's most impressive recruit this season is also an offensive lineman. Tanner Farmer is an OG from Highland Park, IL. The Gophers also offered Farmer. He was invited to and played in the Under Armour All-American Game.

Less Heralded Recruit Sure to Torment the Gophers at Some Point:

Running back Mikale Wilbon, (with a name like that the fact that he spurned Northwestern is a travesty) from Chicago is in line to become the next shifty husker running back. He originally committed to Vanderbilt earlier in the fall, but flipped to Nebraska after James Franklin left for Penn State. He has the ability to be the next Amir Abdulah, and make opposing players work to track him down.

Northwestern Wildcats- Overall Big Ten Rank #8

16 Recruits, 4 4-Star, 10 3-Star.

Pat Fitzgerald worked his magic with a small class getting 25% of his recruits this season to be 4-star recruits. The 5th, 6th and 7th ranked recruits in Illinois are enrolling at Northwestern, with only Ohio State as a Big Ten school stealing one of the higher ranked players.

Arguably the Most Highly Anticipated Recruit:

Northwestern doesn't usually see recruits with offer lists like this one, but 4-star defensive back recruit Parrker Westphal had offers from Florida, Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Notre Dame just to name a few schools. The 13th ranked CB in the country from Bolingbrook, IL will look to step into a depleted Northwestern Defense immediately.

Less Heralded Recruit Sure to Torment the Gophers at Some Point:

We will stick with the running back recruits as 3-star Auston Anderson, from Plano, Texas had offers from Texas, UCLA, and Stanford. Anderson committed back in May to the Wildcats and will figure to be a major cog in the Wildcat offense soon.

Iowa Hawkeyes- Overall Big Ten Rank #10

16 Recruits, 0 4-Star, 19 3-Star.

Kirk Ferentz can't be happy with a 10th ranked Big Ten class. He also can't be happy with the fact that the top two players from Iowa are going out of state with the 2nd ranked player going to....Iowa State! The Hawkeyes did pick up recruits ranked 3 through 7 in Iowa, so all was not lost.

Arguably the Most Highly Anticipated Recruit:

Iowa doesn't have a single player that just stands out as a complete stud, but has several pieces that could evolve into quality players. One such player is Jay Scheel an athlete from La Porte City, Iowa. He committed to Iowa over a year ago and could play big minutes as a WR or in the defensive backfield.

Less Heralded Recruit Sure to Torment the Gophers at Some Point:

Iowa always seems to get unheralded quarterbacks who someone come out of the woodwork just in time to torment Minnesota. The next one of these appears to be Tyler Wiegers, a 3-star recruit from Franklin, Michigan. Wiegers is a pro style QB, and tends to stick in the pocket.

Purdue Boilermakers- Overall Big Ten Rank #13

19 Recruits, 0 4-Star, 17 3-Star.

Purdue is coming off of a poor season, and the recruiting shows it. They only picked up one of the top ten talents in the State of Indiana.

Arguably the Most Highly Anticipated Recruit:

Pro-style 3-star quarterback David Blough is an Eite 11 recruit, Purdue's first one since Drew Brees. He will fight for time immediately and will try and turn Purdue's anemic offense around.

Less Heralded Recruit Sure to Torment the Gophers at Some Point:

Defensive End Gelen Robinson has the type of skills to remind players of several other former Boilermaker greats, including Ryan Kerrigan and Ray Edwards. He didn't have the most impressive offer list, but no doubt he will be chasing a Gopher QB all over the field.

Illinois Fighting Illini- Overall Big Ten Rank #14

18 Recruits, 0 4-Star, 14 3-Star.

Illinois got several surprisingly quality players...maybe Tim Beckman really is Tim Brewster in disguise?

Arguably the Most Highly Anticipated Recruit:

Jihad Ward a 3-star DE from Philadelphia is a monster at 6'7 286lbs. He will be a threat to kill the quarterback immediately. many thought Ward would end up at West Virginia, but the Ilini pulled a coup.

Less Heralded Recruit Sure to Torment the Gophers at Some Point:

Center Nick Allegretti was also given an invite to the US Army All-American Bowl like Gopher commit Connor Mayes. Allegretti, from Frankfort, IL has been in the Illini's plans for a long time, and will no doubt fight with Mayes and others to be the best center in the Big Ten in the next few seasons.

Big Ten East Division

Ohio State Buckeyes- Overall Big Ten Rank #1

23 Recruits, 1 5-Star 15 4-Star

Urban Meyer has once again ruled the Big Ten. I'm just going to link to Land-Grant Holy Land's insane coverage. Its damn impressive.

Arguably the Most Highly Anticipated Recruit:

Good luck picking just one. It probably is the #1 linebacker recruit in the country Raekwon McMillan. Think Laurinaitis/Katzenmoyer good. Wowza.

Less Heralded Recruit Sure to Torment the Gophers at Some Point:

Just take the entire rest of the recruits. If the Gophers can ever get to a point where we get one tenth of this....I'll be thrilled.

Michigan Wolverines- Overall Big Ten Rank #2

16 Recruits, 1 5-Star 8 4-Star

Brady Hoke has once again gotten a recruiting class representative of Michigan circa 1970. The question is can he get them to play like that and not like 2013 Michigan.

Arguably the Most Highly Anticipated Recruit:

No question it is Jabril Peppers. The #3 overall player in the country is an athlete who makes people who watch him remember two other famous Michigan athletes. How about Desmond Howard and Charles Woodson. Have fun throwing against him next fall Mitch!

Less Heralded Recruit Sure to Torment the Gophers at Some Point:

Just take the entire rest of the recruits again. If the Gophers can ever get to a point where we get one tenth of this....I'll be thrilled. Again.

Penn State Nittany Lions- Overall Big Ten Rank #3

25 Recruits, 5 4-Star 20 3-Star

Bill O'Brien leaves, and if anything Penn State just gets better with the addition of James Franklin. Oy, so much for those low years in Happy Valley.

Arguably the Most Highly Anticipated Recruit:

Several good choices, but Tight End Mike Gesicki has to be near the top of the list. Gesicki is one of the top TE recruits in the nation ,and will give Christian Hackenberg one hell of a target. Looking like he might be a Buckeye early, he committed to O'Brien in the fall and stuck with PSU when Franklin came in.

Less Heralded Recruit Sure to Torment the Gophers at Some Point:

We all know who was going to be in this spot. Christian Campbell. Damn you James Franklin.

Michigan State Spartans- Overall Big Ten Rank #4

22 Recruits, 1 5-Star 3 4-Star 18 3-Star

After a trip to the Rose Bowl, you had to think this was going to be a good year for Mark Dantonio and the Spartans. He made the Rose Bowl with a bunch of three stars, so it will be interesting to see what he does with a few more higher profile recruits.

Arguably the Most Highly Anticipated Recruit:

It is no question Malik McDowell is the most anticipated recruit for the Spartans. The questions is whether or not he plays a down for them. McDowell is a 5-star DE who was wanted by several schools including Ohio State, Alabama, Florida State and Michigan. McDowell committed to the Spartans this morning, even though his parents have been publicly vocal about wanting him to go somewhere else. He appeared to sign the Spartan's LOI, but as of this evening it had not been submitted to East Lansing. Yep.... Whether or not McDowell ends up in East Lansing, or down the road in Ann Arbor, or even in Tallahassee will be one to watch over the next few days.

Less Heralded Recruit Sure to Torment the Gophers at Some Point:

Dantonio loves the defense. He really likes his linebackers. It appears MSU got a good one in 3-star Deon Drake. He will be roaming the middle in Spartan Stadium very soon.

Maryland Terrapins- Overall Big Ten Rank #7

17 Recruits, 1 5-Star 3 4-Star 10 3-Star

Welcome to the Big Ten Turtles! Now the question will be how long will it take them to realize this isn't the ACC anymore.

Arguably the Most Highly Anticipated Recruit:

Maryland made a splash by getting a commitment from the #2 offensive tackle in the country Damian Prince. Prince was wanted by most of the country including the big boys of FSU, Alabama, and Florida. The tackle from District heights, MD made a lot of fans by staying home and playing for the Terps. Pay attention 2015 Gopher recruits.

Less Heralded Recruit Sure to Torment the Gophers at Some Point:

Lets go with duel threat quarterback Will Ulmer. Maryland beat out a lot of big schools for Ulmer including fellow Big Ten foes Nebraska, Ohio State, Michigan State, and Wisconsin. The QB from DC decided to stay close to home and will most likely be under center when Maryland makes its first trip to TCF.

Indiana Hoosiers- Overall Big Ten Rank #9

28 Recruits, 1 4-Star 22 3-Star

Big class for Kevin Wilson who will still have a productive offense retuning, but needs all the defensive playmakers he can get.

Arguably the Most Highly Anticipated Recruit:

Offense, offense, offense. Indiana loves the offense. Four-star wide receiver Dominique Booth will only help a potent Hooser offense which returns their two-headed quarterback monster. The Indianapolis WR picked the Hoosers over Tennessee and Missouri.

Less Heralded Recruit Sure to Torment the Gophers at Some Point:

Again....this one is going to hurt. Damn, Tegray Scales would have looked good in maroon and gold.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights- Overall Big Ten Rank #12

28 Recruits, 0 4-Star 18 3-Star

Welcome to the Big Ten Rutgers! Prepare to stink for a while.

Arguably the Most Highly Anticipated Recruit:

Probably it would be 3-star running back Robert Martin. The back from Harrisburg, PA had a Gopher offfer, and took a serious visit to West Virginia before committing to Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights are hoping he is the next Ray Rice.

Less Heralded Recruit Sure to Torment the Gophers at Some Point:

Hometown kids always come back and burn the Gophers. Here is guessing that tight end George Behr would love to be on the receiving end of several Phillip Nelson passes when they return to TCF in 2016.

The highest rated prospect to ever sign with Minnesota in the Internet Recruiting Era made it official.

Vitals:

How he fits:

Jones is an immediate impact player. The Under Armour All-American MVP is a potent blend of a great frame, power, foot quickness, vision and open field ability. Jones can make even the best athletes in the nation look silly one-on-one. Jeff should thrive as the feature back in Limegrover's zone running scheme that loves to pound the rock.

Chances to play in 2014:

Heh. When you're the highest rated player the Gophers have ever signed since the Internet started keeping track of these things, there's not a matter of 'if' but 'when.'

How he fits:

Naturally strong, big and plays with a high motor. Athletic. Has enough power on his initial punch to overpower guards and gain penetration into the backfield.

Chances to play in 2014:

Limited. Moore will need a little more time to refine his skills, so a redshirt season is in order.

How he fits:

A legitimate vertical threat and one-on-one, jump ball match up nightmare. Tall, long and lean, Gentry has a huge catching radius and knows how to use double moves to set up defenders and get vertical for the big play.

Chances to play in 2014:

Good. The Gophers simply don't have anyone like him on the roster and, despite his rail thin build, he should be provide the threat the passing game has been lacking the last several years.
