Strolling Through Twitterland: Week 7

The roller-coaster ride of a season continues, but I'm not really enjoying this ride. This ride got off to a bad start ever since Norwood's true colors showed themselves on the eve of camp. There's just been a weird vibe overhanging the team this season. It's been one big roller-coaster ride of up and down, around and around, where this ride stops, no one knows.

This was a odd week in Gopherland. It was extremely quiet throughout the entire week. It's as if everyone felt the Gophers were on a bye this week and not next. There was very little talk about the Nebraska game. Thankfully, no one was yelling and screaming about Mitch. Other than the non-story story that broke late in the week, the only thing anyone was talking about was whether or not the Bits of Broken Chair would be claimed (side note: awesome to see the Nebraska players and Mike Riley embrace the trophy, it appears this may take off after all). Unfortunately the defense played as energized as the fan base was throughout the week. In other words, they came out extremely flat and they were dominated.

Not really sure what happened versus Nebraska. This was the worst the Gophers defense has played in years. The shocking part was the lack of adjustment by the staff. Maybe we have grown spoiled with the genius of Tracy Claeys and how easily he seems to make in-game adjustments. But we didn't seem to see any adjustments as the game went on. Nebraska just did whatever they wanted to offensively. Even when a Gophers defender was in position to make a play they were a fingertip away from making the play or the Nebraska player would make a sensational play. It was kind of shocking to see them play this way. I don't know if all of the injuries have finally caught up to them or if they just didn't have it, either way it was eye opening.

One of the most frustrating aspects of how poorly the defense played is it wasted Mitch Leidner's best game as a starter. This was the Mitch I expected to see this season. He was on the money with virtually all of his throws. Sure he'd like to have a couple back, especially to Lingen in the decisive drive, more on this drive below. But every player is going to want a play or two back throughout the game. I'm sure Shannon Brooks would like to pick his foot up another 2" on the shoestring tackle that prevented him from housing another 70+ yard touchdown. Anyway, if Mitch can bottle this game and build on it he will quiet all of his critics.

Let's discuss that decisive 4th quarter drive shall we. Ultimately the players put Kill in the position to be forced to make a tough decision. Mitch missed an open Lingen, Mayes <strike>dropped </strike>had a touchdown broken up and the pissed off Texan decided he was wrangling cattle. Instead of 3rd and 10 they were pushed back to 3rd and 20. Not ideal to say the least. Mitch scrambled for 5 and Kill decided to kick the field goal. In my opinion this was a really bad call and I don't like Kill's explanation afterwards either. 4th and 15 is far, far from ideal, however your offense has moved the ball and the odds are better that you will make a play or draw a penalty instead of fielding an onside kick. The odds at fielding an onside kick are slim to none, I'm sure MV would be able to produce the actual statistical breakdown, but the game essentially was over the second Kill made the decision to kick the field goal. The interception and pick-6 that took place afterwards were to be expected and happens all of the time.

Maybe I'm being too critical of Kill, as I said he was put in a position to make a tough decision, but I feel he took the game out of the players hands with his decision to kick the field goal. As bad as this game was, they were still somehow in striking distance of making it way more interesting than it should have been. The other factor I thought about it is, if they could have punched that home, the Nebraska players would have had the "great here we go again thoughts" with all that has happened in their season and who knows what happens once that thought enters their minds. Sadly we as a Gopher fan base know that feeling all too well.

This has been discussed in the past and to me it reared its ugly head again against Nebraska. Does the Gophers offense have a running back screen in its playbook? The Nebraska defense was just begging to have a running back screen called on them in the 4th quarter. In my opinion it would have been a perfect play call for the 4th and 15. But that's just one mans opinion.

I will never wish for or enjoy a Minnesota loss. But this loss had one silver lining that I will celebrate.

Let's talk about the Broken Chair. There are plenty of game related things to talk about, but I don't want to. The game wasn't that fun, but overall it was a great day. Getting back to your home state on a beautiful fall weather weekend will do that. Anyway, I've got great beer, college football on TV, and wonderful news out of Nebraska:

There are still plenty of things wrong for the Gophers.

The Golden Gophers lose at home to Nebraska 25-48 giving up the most points since losing 0-58 at Michigan in 2011, Jerry Kill's first season. A balanced and complete offensive performance by the Cornhuskers that was capped by a couple interceptions as Minnesota tried to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter.

Nebraska has had their issues with putting teams away this season losing four games in the final seconds of the game. Today they did not fall victim to another end of game meltdown as they took the lead over the Golden Gophers, extended it and put them away. Behind 471 yards of total offense, the Cornhuskers were never really threatened, taking home the coveted $5 Bits of Broken Chair rivalry trophy.

Once again the Gophers are playing the game of plugging one hole only to find another one leaking. This week the offense looked fine putting up 366 yards of offense. K.J. Maye had 11 receptions for 94 yards and a rushing touchdown. Mitch Leidner threw for 301 yards completing 65% of his passes before two late picks sealed our fate. But it was the defense who really struggled to stop the Nebraska offense. All day the Gopher D was on their heels giving up 41 points (48 was the total but 7 of those was a late pick-six), 464 yards and long drives. Nebraska did not punt until the third quarter and only twice for the game.

The Gopher offense, which has struggled mightily this year early in games, took the opening kick off and marched down for a very precise and quick 0-7 lead. Leider goes 5/5 on the drive and finishes it off with a 24-yard pass to Eric Carter in the end zone. Nebraska's pass defense problems have been well-documented and it looked at though the Gopher offense would be able to move the ball this afternoon on the Black Shirts.

But from that point it was pretty much all Nebraska. They took the ball and in three plays scored on a 69-yard run by Terrell Newby to tie things up. Newby would end up with 116 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. Later in the quarter, following a Shannon Brooks fumble, the Huskers scored again in three plays. This time it was Tommy Armstrong Jr. finding Alonzo Moore for a 32-yard touchdown pass on third and 13. Now up 14-7, extended to 17-7 early in the second quarter.

Minnesota took the ball at this point and managed a very nice, 75-yard drive in eight plays to get back to within 3. But the defense couldn't stop Nebraska's answer as they also went 75 yards on eight plays to get back to a 10-point lead that they would take into halftime.

The third quarter's only score was a 99-yard, back-breaking drive by Nebraska to open things up to 31-14 after Armstrong hit Cethan Carter from 10 yards out to cap the drive. Now up 31-14, which then was pushed to 38-14 in the fourth quarter on Armstrong's third touchdown of the day. The Nebraska quarterback ended with a very nice day of 261 yards passing, 3 touchdowns and no turnovers.

Minnesota briefly made things interesting, scoring early in the fourth, converting a two-point conversion and forcing a Nebraska punt. But other than an odd decision to kick a field goal, down 16 points, the Gophers never came close to scoring again. Their final two possessions were interceptions as the offense was in desperation mode. No dramatic loss in the final minutes for Nebraska fans this week.

A very frustrating game for the Gophers. The defense was just out of position and on their heels all game long, allowing Nebraska to move the ball freely. In the end Jerry Kill did what he does which is weakly attempt to take the blame saying it was on him and he was out-coached today. He is accurate that Nebraska beat Minnesota both on the field and from the sidelines.

Bad game in what has been undoubtedly a disappointing season. More to come this week but tonight I suggest bourbon. Something barrel proof on this beautiful Fall evening. Enjoy the week off before Michigan comes to town.

The Chair heads to Lincoln,

In the third quarter, Minnesota pinned Nebraska on the 1 yard line. Nebraska promptly marched down the field and scored to take a 31-14 lead. In my mind, that was a microcosm of a game where Minnesota's injuries on defense finally affected the outcome of the game. The Gophers are too banged up on the defensive side of the ball to present a realistic challenge to a top offense. In Nebraska, Minnesota faced a team that had an excellent sense of what would and would not work against the Gophers.

Mitch Leidner started the game 17/19 with a Touchdown. Most of these completions were short passes, mainly screens to Maye and Wolitarsky. Still, if the Gophers had been able to put together any semblance of a run game, his performance would have been more than enough for a victory. Alas, that was an impossibility against Nebraska, who looked like the Blackshirts of old. He finished with over 300 yards passing, with one terrible interception at the end that Nebraska returned for a pick 6.

Let's talk about the line, or rather what passed for the line. This was the 6th starting line up in seven games for the Gophers. Derek Burns noted the importance of week to week consistency in our offensive line Q/A.

[C]onsistency from week to week is important. In my opinion an offensive lineman needs about 1-2 weeks of practice next to the same people to get a feel for how they combo block, trade off defenders, etc. Also, each week you prepare for the upcoming opponent's defensive schemes so it's important to get reps with the same people next to you against the defensive looks your going to see on Saturday so it isn't all brand new.

The inability to trade off defenders was a major problem throughout the game. The Gophers were constantly beat on stunts and run blitzes. Nebraska's defensive line controlled the line of scrimmage the entire game. Minnesota wants to define itself as a power running team, but that team has been absent against any competent rushing defense all year. That includes Kent State, which is sneaky good.

Finally, I do not understand the decision to kick the field goal and then go for the onside kick. The math does not make any sense, and it's another confusing decision by Jerry Kill and his staff.

Minnesota is now 1-2 in Big Ten play, chairless, and the schedule is unfavorable the rest of the way.

Nebraska Football is one loss away from dying like Goose in Top Gun. Don't worry, that statement will probably make sense by the time you're done reading this. Maybe.

Opening Thoughts

So, I guess that's two weeks where I let the rest of the world beat me down before I got the preview up. Some quick thoughts about today?

- I don't think Nebraska fans are very happy with life, Mike Riley, or Husker football.

- I think the Gophers should win so we can laugh at them for freaking out about losing to Minnesota three years in a row. If this happens expect lots of "WE SHOULD NEVER LOSE TO MINNESOTA EVER MUCH LESS THREE TIMES IN A ROW TOM OSBORNE WOULD NEVER HAVE ALLOWED SOMETHING LIKE THIS TO HAPPEN EVER HE IS A DEITY AND DID I MENTION HOW MUCH I DISLIKE THIS REILLY FELLA HE REALLY ISN'T THAT GOOD OF A COACH FIRE EICHORST ARGHHHHHHHHH!"

- Seriously, it will be just like that. I want to see that.

Gnome #TAKES

The gnomes are certain of one thing. Nebraska fans have lost that loving feeling.

Keys to the Game

- Keep forcing turnovers: YOU SAW WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK MINNESOTA, PLEASE CONTINUE TO GIVE JALEN MYRICK THE CHANCE TO DO FUN PICK SIX CELEBRATIONS.

How Afraid Am I?

For those who don't know, this is a bit where I rank my fear by saying how many Tim Brewsters I am afraid of the opponent. The more Tim Brewsters I list, the more afraid I am...because the memory of Timmy Brew is scary for all Gophers fans.
